Colby swim teams fall in meets to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --- All-American Kelly Norsworthy won three individual events and helped a relay team to a victory for the Colby College women's swimming and diving team, while Mike Finnerty and Evan Mullin each won races for the men in meets against MIT on Saturday.
The MIT women took a 170-124 win over Colby and the MIT men won 176-94.
Norsworthy won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.66), 200 breaststroke (2:27.30), 200 individual medley (2:13.11), and helped the team of Jeanne Loftus, Maddie Given, and Courtney Chilcote take the 200 medley relay in 1:54.73.
Kelsey Potdevin had an NCAA provisional qualifying time in winning the 100 backstroke (59.59) and she also took the 200 backstroke (2:12.37).
For the Colby men, Finnerty was a winner in the 200 backstroke (2:01.75) and Mullin took the 200 freestyle in 1:45.99. Mullin, Peter Williams, Craig Zevin, and Sam Wampler raced to a victory in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:31.08 clocking.

As one of our first year swimmers told me today, it is that good time of year where we can start seeing all of our hard work pay off. How right she is! This weekend - while the team outcome was not what we would have desired - it was great to watch our team build upon last weekend. Those who had breakout performances against Middlebury continued to move forward and several of our team members who did not see improvements last week posted some amazing swims against M.I.T. Overall our swims are showing improvement not only in the yellow numbers at the end of the race, but - and in many ways more important - in the increase in stroke length and improved pacing. Simply put we look very good right now!
After reviewing the meet and recognizing those team members who posted season best, unshaved bests, and lifetime bests this weekend, the team voted for performer of the meet.
The men selected Evan Mullin '08. Evan has been having his best season at Colby so far this year. At the M.I.T. meet, Evan led off the 200 Medley Relay in a season best of 26.12. Then he won the 200 Free dropping a strong 1:45.99 for a best unshaved time. He followed this up with a beautifully swum 500 Free which was also a best unshaved time of 4:53.59.
The women, after nominating 25% of their squad for the honor, selected Kelsey Potdevin '09. Since returning from a semester studying in Dijon, Kelsey has been on fire. Kelsey won the 100 backstroke in an NCAA qualifying time of 59.59. This time currently ranks her 16th in Division III . Kelsey also won the 200 backstroke with a solid time of 2:12.37, and then anchored our 200 Free Relay (and almost making up MIT's 3 body length lead) with blistering 24.80. |
