 Scott GriffithHead Coach (Preseniors/Novice)Email
Scott joined the GSC team as head
coach in the fall of 2004. Since his arrival in Juneau, the
team has doubled in size, gone from no qualifying senior sectionals
swimmers to 14. 5 of those swimmers have gone on to
achieve Junior National standards.
Scott was awarded Alaska Senior Coach of the year in
2006, 2007, and 2009.
Scott is also a former swimmer and
graduate of the University of Virginia. His career began in 1993,
coaching numerous summer league swim teams. Scott served as an
assistant coach for years before taking the role as head coach and
aquatics director from 1999 - 2004. During his tenure in Virginia,
his swimmers achieved many distinguishing honors. Scott has coached
High School All-Americans, YMCA All-Americans, YMCA National Record
Holders, numerous Top 16 athletes, Junior National qualifiers,
Eastern Zone qualifiers and champions, and Virginia state record
holders. Scott has also served time as president of the Virginia
YMCA Swimming league and is currently an ASCA level III
coach.
Scott has a passion for the sport
of swimming and enjoys every moment he gets to share with young
athletes. While at GSC, Scott’s goal is help swimmers achieve
their goals as well as learn the many wonderful values and lessons
the sport has to offer.

Thea Howard has been a GSC Assistant Coach since 2005. She
has 14 years experience as a Water Safety Instructor, and has
coached several other sports, including: volleyball,
basketball, and softball. One of her greatest coaching
achievements was guiding a girls’ high school basketball team
through a nine-game post-season winning streak. Thea was a
two-sport varsity athlete in college at Barnard College, Columbia
University, and a four-sport varsity athlete in high school at
JDHS.
Thea began competitive swimming at the age of 9 in a summer
recreation-league program in Omaha, Nebraska. Her favorite
swimming memory from childhood is getting a best time and a
second-place finish during a race where her coach got her to the
pool late, she missed warm-ups, the announcer said her name wrong,
and she felt like she was going slower than ever. Currently,
she doesn’t get much time to train in the water, because she
spends most of her extra energy working with GSC swimmers and
playing with her two daughters, Cameron and Audrey. Thea has
a goal of one day competing as an entire family in a triathalon.
