Scott Griffith, Head Coach
Senior I, II, HSM,
Presenior, and Developmental

Scott joined the GSC team as head coach in the fall of 2004. Scott comes from the state of Virginia where he was the former head coach of the Waynesboro YMCA/SMAC Swim Team in Waynesboro VA. Scott is also a former swimmer and graduate of the University of Virginia. His career began in 1993, coaching numerous summer league swim teams. Scott served as an assistant coach for years before taking the role as head coach and aquatics director from 1999 - 2004. During his tenure in Virginia, his swimmers achieved many distinguishing honors. Scott has coached High School All-Americans, YMCA All-Americans, YMCA National Record Holders, numerous Top 16 athletes, Junior National qualifiers, Eastern Zone qualifiers and champions, and Virginia state record holders. Scott has also served time as president of the Virginia YMCA Swimming league and is currently an ASCA level III coach.

Scott has a passion for the sport of swimming and enjoys every moment he gets to share with young athletes. While at GSC, Scott's goal is help swimmers achieve their goals as well as learn the many wonderful values and lessons the sport has to offer.



Kathrin Millhorn, Head Age Group Coach
Age Group I and II

Kathie started swimming when she was 12 years old. Her first competitive experience was on the Wenatchee Swim Team and then with the Eastmont Barracudas Swim Team. She has been in the aquatic instruction field for 23 years and a swim coach for 21 years. Her coaching career began with the Bellingham Swim Team while attending the Western Washington University. In 1987, Kathie started coaching for GSC as a volunteer substitute coach. Since that time, she has served as an assistant coach as well as interim head coach. Kathie takes the role of head Pre-Senior coach.

Laurie Lucas, Assistant Coach
Age Group I
Lauie Lucas has lived in Alaska most of her life, growing up in Petersburg
and participating on the Viking Swim club and the high school swim team for
a total of eleven years, in doing so she qualified for state all four years
of high school. After high school, she enlisted in the US Navy and served
for a three-year period during which time she was a petty officer, and a
security officer, which helped develop her strong leadership skills. She
became a certified lifeguard at the age of twenty-one, and is currently
working at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool in Juneau, Alaska and holds a permanent head guard position. Some of her certifications include; Water
Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Instructor, and Lifeguard Training Instructor.
She is a good people person, strong leader, great coach, and is proud to be
part of the Glacier Swim Club, and hopes to continue in her ability to help
develop swimmers into great athletes.

Age Group I and II
Rhea Becke is a volunteer for the Glacier Swim Club. She has been swimming since she began high school. She participated in and helped organize the swim club at Marquette University during college and has since swam on her own and with the Juneau Masters. She is a secondary science teacher and enjoys swimming, hiking, music, and knitting.

Coaching Staff Goals
Practice Sessions
  • To make sure every swimmer understands their points of focus on every swim, set or training session, and to hold them accountable for maintaining that focus.
  • To provide as much positive and constructive feedback to every swimmer as possible at every practice session.
  • To maintain the highest levels of energy, encouragement and enthusiasm every day.
  • To provide a new mental and/or physical challenge every day.
  • To recognize the achievement of a new goal or new accomplishment every day.

Swim Meets
  • To communicate with every swimmer after every race.

  • To encourage each swimmer to focus on personal improvement instead of placement.
  • To encourage our swimmers to have the loudest cheering section at every meet during every race.
  • To model and encourage our swimmers to conduct themselves with the greatest sportsmanship at every meet and in every situation.
  • To encourage and recognize our opponents after every race win or lose.
  • To warm down after every race.

Team
  • To have every team member qualify for the SE Championships.
  • To win the Southeast Championships.
  • To finish in first or second in every age group at Southeast Championships.
  • To have a swimmer score in every event at Southeast Championships.
  • To have 40 or more swimmers qualify for and attend Age Group Champs.
  • To place in the top 5 at age group champs.
  • To have 40 or more swimmers qualify for and attend JO's.
  • To place in the top 5 at JO's.
  • To qualify 5 or more swimmers for Senior Sectionals.
  • To qualify 5 or more swimmers for Age Group Sectionals.
  • To qualify 5 or more swimmer for Western Zones.
  • To increase each swimmers commitment and self-esteem.
